3 Simple Solutions to Finding “YOU” Again After Having a Baby
So the hard part is over. And by hard part I mean having the baby. Regardless of how exhilarating it can be, there's no denying that having children is a physically exhausting and trying time for mom, whether your child grew in your stomach or in your heart (hello, adoptive gutsy moms!). Now that you've assured that mom and baby are in a stable place, it's time to take stock of your life and attend to some self-care. Your life, body, and family composition may have changed, but caring for yourself should always remain constant.
So how do you find yourself again?
Here are 3 simple things you can do to reclaim your own feelings of normalness and well-being (and no, I won't tell you to go to the gym...I'll save that for when the kids are all cared for, the house is in order, you've had enough sleep, and are caught up with work...yeah, I know).
Get a new perfume, hairstyle, or piece of jewelry. These are all things that can immediately lift your spirits and boost your confidence, and they have nothing whatsoever to do with hiding stretch marks or strategically positioning your clothing (not that we should have to do that anyway, but that's for another post).
Have an honest conversation with your partner about where you are in terms of intimacy. Jumping back into bed might not be on the immediate radar, but intimacy doesn't have to include sex. It's still important for your partner to let you know in what ways they love your changing body. That said, it can take several months for sex to feel comfortable and pleasurable again, and patience and loving acceptance can make all the difference in the meantime.
Make a date with a good friend/relative, share some memories/laughs and make sure you show up. It is so easy to get overwhelmed with being a parent that you forget that you were actually a friend, sister, daughter, neighbour or co-worker before all this. Getting back into that headspace can really help you re-energize yourself. Even if it is just for a quick coffee, get yourself ready (read this as, no yoga pants!) and go out!
Just doing these simple steps can help you get back to your normal and make you feel so much better so that you can get back to being the gutsy mom you know you are.
